Am al-Nakba is Arabisch voor 'het rampjaar'.
Het jaar 1920 werd door de Arabieren Am Al-Nakba genoemd omdat Groot-Brittannië en Frankrijk toen de Arabische delen van het Ottomaanse rijk onderling verdeelden als mandaatgebieden.[1] Opstanden tegen de bezetting werden met militair geweld, waaronder het gebruik van gifgas[2], neergeslagen.
