Edward Goldenberg Robinson, geboren als Emanuel Goldenberg (Boekarest, 12 december 1893 - Hollywood, 26 januari 1973) was een Amerikaans acteur van Joods-Roemeense afkomst.

Levensloop

Robinson kwam op tienjarige leeftijd naar de Verenigde Staten, de familie vestigde zich in New Yorks Lower East Side. Tijdens zijn schooltijd begon hij met acteren en liet daarvoor een carrière als rabbi en advocaat schieten.

Robinson kreeg een beurs van de American Academy of Dramatic Arts en trad voor het eerst op in 1913, onder zijn nieuw aangenomen naam Edward G. Robinson. Hij trad vijftien jaar lang op op Broadway en figureerde in een film. In 1923 begon hij aan zijn eerste film, The Bright Shawl.

Zijn bekendste rol die bepalend zou blijken te zijn voor zijn verdere carrière, was die van de gangster Rico Bandello in de film Little Caesar uit 1930. Hij zou diverse biografische rollen spelen en zijn opwachting maken in psychologische drama's. In Key Largo schitterde hij opnieuw als gangster.

In de jaren 50 werd Robinson beschuldigd van communistische sympathieën, maar hij werd door het House Committee on Un-American Activities op basis van zijn getuigenis vrijgesproken.

Vanwege zijn scheiding van Gladys Lloyd moest hij in 1956 een groot deel van zijn kunstcollectie verkopen. In dat jaar stond hij ook weer op Broadway. Twee jaar na zijn scheiding trouwde hij opnieuw.

Edward G. Robinson overleed op 79-jarige leeftijd aan kanker, slechts negen dagen na de voltooiing van zijn laatste film, Soylent Green. Hij ontving in datzelfde jaar postuum een Oscar voor zijn gehele oeuvre. Bij leven was hij nooit voor een Oscar genomineerd.
