Takaki

Ronald Takaki (Oahu, 12 april, 1939 - 26 mei 2009) was een Amerikaans historicus, etnograaf en schrijver.

Afkomstig van Hawaï, ging hij naar school in Wooster in Ohio en ging vervolgens studeren aan de universiteit van Richmond en aan de University of California. In 1967 behaalde hij een doctoraat in Berkeley. Hij begon les te geven aan de University of California in Los Angeles, waar hij de eerste was om een cursus "Geschiedenis van de Zwarten" te doceren. In 1972 kreeg hij een leeropdracht in Berkeley waar zijn cursus "Racial Inequality in America: a Comparative Perspective" het begin werd van de richting etnische studies. Zijn werk hielp mede een aantal stereotypes over de Aziatische Amerikanen uit de wereld te helpen, zoals de mythe van de "modelminderheid" .

Door zijn persoonlijke ervaringen, werd Takaki een strijder voor de gelijkheid van de Aziatische Amerikanen. Zo zag de familie van zijn vrouw hem slechts als een "jap" en niet als een geboren Amerikaans burger. Takaki overleed door zelfmoord in mei 2009, nadat hij al 20 jaar leed aan multiple sclerose.
