Kemse címeréhez a település régi pecsétlenyomatai jelentették a kiindulópontot. A legrégibb pecsétkép motívuma a szívből nőtt rózsatő. Ez a jelkép, mely nemcsak a hazai szfragisztikában lelhető fel, hanem a német, pontosabban a szász heraldikának is kedvelt eleme, többrétegű jelentéstartalommal bír. Túl azon, hogy találkozunk ezzel a jelrendszerrel a magyar népművészetben, ahol leginkább szerelmi jelképként funkcionál, fő jelentéstartalmát a barokk korban kell keresnünk, ahol a népi vallásos hithez kapcsolódik. A szívből nőtt rózsa párhuzamba állítható a Luther-rózsával, melynek értelmezése szinte mindenben megegyezik a fentiekkel. A község református település.
Mint minden kultúra, a címertan is a kozmikus világhoz kapcsolja a színeket. Ennek megfelelően a pajzsokon megjelenő színek szimbolikus jelentése a következő: Krisztus szeretetét és tiszteletét tükrözi a rózsa virága, elemeire bontható: az öt szirom Krisztus szent sebeit jelképezik, a virág zöld kelyhe, mely felfogja Krisztus vérét, jelenti az emberiséget, mely "befogadja" a krisztusi szeretetet, megbocsátást és önfeláldozást. A virágok kelyhe egyébként a keresztyén ikonográfiában a Grállal azonosul - azzal a tállal, melyből az utolsó vacsorán Krisztus és társai ettek, amelybe utóbb Krisztus vérét felfogták. A szív nem csupán az égi szerelem jelképeként szerepel ez esetben.
A bibliai felfogás szerint nemcsak az emberi testnek központja, hanem az érzelmek, az intellektus, az életerő centruma is, mely irányítja az emberi cselekvést, haragot, szeretetet. A szívből nőtt rózsa párhuzamba állítható az evangélikus egyház címerével is, a Luther-rózsával, melynek értelmezése szinte mindenben megegyezik a fentiekkel.
A színek jelentései:
Arany (Nap): értelem, ész, tekintély, hit, erkölcsösség, erény.
Ezüst (Hold): bölcsesség, ártatlanság, tisztaság, szemérmesség.
Vörös (Mars): hazaszeretet, önfeláldozás, tenni akarás, nagylelkűség.
Kék (Jupiter): elvhűség, állhatatosság, bizalom, ellenálló-képesség.
Zöld (Vénusz): szabadság, szeretet, remény, boldogság, szépség, egészség.
