De In het nieuws pagina is waar we nieuws op dagelijke basis plaatsen met links naar achtergrond artikels. Het belangrijkste zijn de gebeurtenissen. Daarnaast kunnen trends en ontwikkelingen ook interessant zijn. Echter, we plaatsen geen POV-laden editorials en opiniestukken.

Veel mensen gebruiken zoekmachines om informatie te vinden over huidige gebeurtenissen. Een significant gedeelte van de zoekopdrachten op Yahoo, Google, etc. gaat over onderwerpen die in het nieuws zijn. Als we onze best doen om relevante links aan de In het nieuws pagina toe te voegen en tegelijkertijd goede artikels schrijven waarheen gelinkt wordt levert dat veel verkeer op van zoekmachines. Zo bouwen we ook een reputatie op als plek waar mensen komen om meer informatie te vinden over zaken die zich nu afspelen.

Wikipedia is geen nieuws service

We zouden ons niet bezig moeten houden met het schrijven van artikels over breaking news stories tenzij we echt zeker kunnen zijn, zoals bijvoorbeeld bij de September 11 attacks, dat er in de toekomst een significant vraag naar een encyclopedie artikel over dat onderwerp zal zijn. Een significant gevaar is dat nieuws artikels ook actueel moeten worden gehouden om ze accuraat te laten blijven. Kortom, we wensen niet te functioneren als een amateur nieuwsorganisatie en we moeten niet proberen te concurreren met professionele nieuwsorganisaties.

In het nieuws is een news backgrounder

Wat we wel kunnen doen, en waarschijnlijk vaak beter dan een professionele nieuwsorganisatie (die vaak inadequate achtergrond informatie verschaffen), is het schrijven van in-depth achtergrondartikels over onderwerpen die deeply informeren en die een sophisticated inzicht in de huidige ontwikkelingen mogelijk maken. Terwijl we bijna zeker niet willen schrijven over de herfst van Mazar-i-Sharif voor de Noordelijke Alliantie, zullen we zeker artikels verwelkomen over de Noordelijke Alliantie, Mazar-i-Sharif, etnisch conflict, etc. De achtergrond is vaak belangrijker dan het dagelijkse nieuws volgen.

Items schrijven

Elk geplaatst nieuws item zou niet meer moeten omvatten dan een kleine alinea. Schrijf beknopt, vermijd overbodige woorden, houd je aan de spellingsregels en vorm complete zinnen. Aim for brevity: concentreer op wat er gebeurd is, waar, en wie. Voor waarom is het waarschijnlijk niet de juiste plek.

At the end of the listing, quote one or more URLs, from reputable news sources, as references. These references – or judiciously linked Wikipedia articles – should offer the detailed explanations, background information, and the like that were omitted from the listing.

Een context aangeven

It is customary, if possible, to indicate the context for a story at the start of the line. A good example would be:

• SCO v. IBM Linux lawsuit: SCO Group files subpoenas for Richard Stallman and Linus Torvalds. [1]

The context string, SCO v. IBM Linux lawsuit, links to a story on the relevant topic. This is ideal but not always possible.

Here is another good example:

• Israeli-Palestinian conflict: A hard-hitting UN report says that Israel will effectively annex large areas of Palestinian territory as a result of the permits it intends to issue to Palestinians near the controversial "security wall" currently being erected in the West Bank. [1]

The context is not the geographical location

For example, this is incorrect:

• Saskatchewan: The NDP government of Lorne Calvert is returned to power with a majority government in the general election. [1]

However, this is correct:

• Saskatchewan general election, 2003: The NDP government of Lorne Calvert is returned to power with a majority government. [1]

as is this:

• Politics of the Netherlands: The first Balkenende cabinet resigns. Because of the constant internal fighting in the new party LPF, the other two governing parties, CDA and VVD, decided that continuing the coalition was impossible. It seems almost certain that there will be new elections, possibly as early as December. [1]

This is incorrect:

• Solar system: The sun surprises astronomers by launching another solar flare, this time the largest ever recorded. [1]

The solar system is the location, not the context. This is better:

• The sun surprises astronomers by launching another solar flare, this time the largest ever recorded. [1]

The context is not the subject

This is incorrect context:

• Jessica Lynch: A new book reveals details of her capture and captivity. She was treated brutally, as evinced by her physical condition, and, according to medical records, was anally raped. The book says some Iraqi doctors said Lynch was virtually dead. [1]

Why? Because Jessica Lynch is the subject of the entry, not the context. It would be better to rewrite it with a context like this:

• A new book reveals the details of Jessica Lynch's capture and captivity. She was treated brutally, as evinced by her physical condition, and, according to medical records, was anally raped. The book says some Iraqi doctors said Lynch was virtually dead. [1]

Yet another example:

• Space: After 26 years, and at a distance from Earth of over 8 billion miles, Voyager 1 exits the solar system. It is expected to keep on transmitting into the 2020s. [1]

This is better:

• Voyager program: After 26 years, and at a distance from Earth of over 8 billion miles, Voyager 1 exits the solar system. It is expected to keep on transmitting into the 2020s. [1]

Over tijdszones

Geef, als het mogelijk en toepasselijk is, de lokale tijd en de UTC aan. Bijvoorbeeld, als er een aardbeving plaatsvindt, is het nuttig om zowel een common reference (ie, UTC) als de lokale tijd te noemen, om de gebeurtenis in een context te plaatsen (spitsuur, lunchtijd, etc).
