She was sobbing, nay, almost roaring, and in the utmostagony of rage and terror. As soon as she saw me, she redoubledher cries; but her voice was so broken, I could not understand aword she said. I was so much shocked, that it was with difficultyI forebore exclaiming against the cruelty of the Captain for thuswantonly ill-treating her; and I could not forgive myself for havingpassively suffered the deception. I used my utmost endeavoursto comfort her, assuring her of our present safety, and begging herto rise and return to the chariot. Almost bursting with passion, she pointed to her feet, and withfrightful violence she actually tore the ground with her hands.
