A bottle of Oude Gueuze from Hanssens Artisanaal in Dworp, Belgium, at Café Rose Red in Bruges.
Hanssens Oude Gueuze is a 6% abv traditional oude geuze made by husband and wife John Matthys and Sidy Hanssens who run the geuzestekerij Hanssens. She is the daughter of Theo Hanssens and the fourth generation Hanssens to run the family business, which produces about 400 hl sour ale per year.
This bottle from 2010 poured a hazy amber color with a beige head. It had a strong sour aroma, with plenty of lemon, but also a dirty farmhouse character. Mouthfeel was light with a tart acidic bite. The flavor started out with a lemony sourness, a bit simple, but with notes of dried leaves and brett. Overall a fairly sour oude geuze.
