Gift of Mrs A E Osborne
Opmerkingen Australian Imperial Forces (AIF) khaki felt slouch hat with puggaree, unit patch and rising sun badge Associated with NX104287 (Captain- Sergeant) John Darling Osborne, British Borneo Civil Administration Unit (BBCAU) During WW2, John Osborne served with the Australian Artillery in the Pacific (Borneo and New Guinea), and subsequently remained in Borneo serving with the British Borneo Military Administration (1945 - January 1946) investigating Japanese activities during their occupation of Borneo. He then worked as a drug salesman in Queensland and in 1948 came to New Zealand where he met his wife-to-be. Following their marriage John and Alice Osborne set up home in Auckland, where John became the New Zealand General Manager of the US drug company Frederick Stearns. He later had a home appliance business in Panmure. Detailed bio John Osborne was born in Manly, NSW in 1920. At 18 he voluntarily enlisted in the Australian militia and was posted to the 1st Anti-Aircraft Battery, HQ. Despite the establishment in 1939 of the 2nd Australian Imperial Force for overseas service, the militia remained in Australia and largely inert until war broke out in the Pacific in late 1941. In early 1942, Osborne enlisted with the Special Forces and was transferred to the AIF Australian Heavy Anti- Aircraft Battery where he was speedily promoted to the rank of Sergeant. His service record shows multiple postings at the School of Artillery and to HQ at various units. According to the family narrative Osborne achieved the rank of Warrant Officer , “saw service in Borneo and New Guinea with the Artillery. At various times in the war he returned on leave and was for a time a jungle warfare instructor in the Glass House Mountains in Queensland.” Certainly at the end of the war Osborne was posted to Labuan Island with the British Borneo Civil Administration Unit (BBCAU) after which his commanding officer wrote in a reference- “He was engaged in work relating to the investigations of Japanese activities during the occupation and he helped to organise administration from Kuching to Tawau on the north side of Borneo.” John Osborne moved to Auckland in 1948, eventually settling in Howick. In a hand-written note referring to military patches on the tunic, Osborne wrote he was proud of being a Gun Sergeant adding, “I was no hero just a very very ordinary person.”
