English: Detail of the north transept portal from the east corridor of the cloisters of the Basilica of Saint Servatius in Maastricht, the Netherlands. The 12th-century portal was probably moved here in the 15th century from the Vrijthof entrance. The heavily worn archivolt of red sandstone has floral decorations. The tympanum shows a mandorla with Christ in Majesty, surrounded by the symbols of the four evangelists. The text around the tympanum reads: + HEC DOMUS ORANDI DOMUS EST PECCATA LAVANDI + + HOC SUBEAS LIMEN PURGARE VOLENS HOMO CRIMEN (This house of prayer is a house of purification of sins. Step over the threshold, o man, if you wish to purify yourself of sins), and on the lintel: + INTUS PECCATIS LAVACRUM DAT FONS PIETATIS (Inside, the source of grace will provide forgiveness of your sins). |
