Ron Lesthaeghe, born Oostende 2 juni 1945. Emeritus professor of Social Science Research Methods and Demography at the Free University Brussels (VUB), member of the Flemish, Dutch and US Academies of Science, Received awards from associations in demography (PAA, IUSSP) and received the Quinquennial J. Solvay Prize (vijfjaarlijkse staatsprijs) Belgian Natl. Science Foundation NFWO. Chairs at University of Antwerp, Institut Sciences Politique Paris, and Harvard University. Visiting professor Univ. of Michigan, Univ. California Irvine, Autonoma Univ. Barcelona.

His contributions are in formal demography, demographic and economic studies of social security costs of ageing, fertility analysis, historical demography, demography of Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America, Values research Belgium and Europe, Turkish and Moroccan populations in Belgium.

His major contributions deal with the subject of demographic transitions and particularly with the Second Demographic Transition in Europe, the US , Latin America and industrialised Asian Countries. He is the founding father in 1986 together with D.J. van de Kaa of the notion and theory of the Second Demographic Transition.
