Boat race.
The regatta was to take place at 10 o’clock in the morning in Phaleron Bay. ... Crowds of people arrived at Phaleron by train, by the steam tramway or by carriages, but the wind continued blowing with such energy that no competitors for the race presented themselves. At last it was decided that a race should be held only by boats of four oars. A steamlaunch transported the competitors to Old Phaleron, where the boats of the Panhellenic Club of Athens and that of the Nautical Club of Syra chose the place for starting; but unluckily the bad weather changed into a real storm, which made any attempt to a race impossible. The regatta was therefore postponed to three o’clock in the afternoon. In the afternoon however the storm was still on the increase, some of the lighter embarkations were thrown on the shore by the violence of the waves, and the elements continued to rage with such fury that every idea of a boatrace had to be given up.

Volgens een andere bron, Olympische Sommerspiele Die Chronik I - Athen 1896 - Berlin 1936 van Volker Kluge ISBN 3 328 00715 6, stonden op het programma voor Athene 1896 7 roeinummers en geen enkel zeilnummer. 4 van deze roeinummers zijn nog steeds wedstrijdnummers, skiff, dubbeltwee, twee met stuurman en vier met stuurman. De 3 andere roeinummers waren met sloepen van oorlogsschepen, een 6 persoonssloep, een grote sloep met 16 tot 20 roeiers en een grote sloep met 10 tot 14 roeiers. Al deze wedstrijden stonden voor 1 april op het programma en ze werden alle afgelast.

De Engelse wiki geeft aan dat zowel het zeilen als het roeien in 1896 niet doorging vanwege de weersomstandigheden. Miho 13 mei 2010 16:42 (CEST)
