Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist relic is a tooth of the Buddha which is housed under the golden-brown roof in the center of the complex of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Buddha’s tooth was supposedly snatched from the flames of his funeral pyre in 483 BCE. During the 4th century CE the tooth was smuggled out of India into Sri Lanka hidden in the hair of a princess. Originally taken to the ancient capital Anuradhapura, the tooth moved around before finally ending up in Kandy. An invading army carried it back to India in 1283, but King Parakramabahu III who reigned from 1302 to 1310 retrieved it. The Portuguese apparently stole the tooth in the 16th century, but the Sinhalese say it was just a replica. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic was primarily constructed from 1687 to 1707 and from 1747 to 1782. The golden canopy over the main shrine was built in 1987 with significant contributions from the Japanese. The Sacred City of Kandy became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.
