English: Drawing of Mount Ellsworth (Utah, US) and the dome structure in rock layers around it, by geologist Grove Kral Gilbert in 1877. Mount Ellsworth consists of a laccolite, a big body of intruded and solidified magma. Overlying rock layers have been eroded. Gilbert was one of the first geologists to recognize the dome structure and properly explain its formation as the rock layers were pushed upward by a rising body of magma.
This illustration was published in Gilbert's Report on the Geology of the Henry Mountains. It is the frontispiece of the report. Original caption by Gilbert: Half stereogram of Mount Ellsworth, drawn to illustrate the form of the displacement and the progress of the erosion. The base of the figure represents the sea-level. The remote half shows the result of uplift alone: the near half, the result of uplift and erosion, or the actual condition. |
