To face page 124, MECHLIN 125 various faucy stitches introduced. Its distinguishing fea-ture is the cordonnet or flat silky thread which outlines thepattern, and gives to this lace the character of embroidery(hence it is sometimes called Broderie de Malines^); andsecondly, the hexagonal mesh of the reseau. This ismade of two threads twisted twice on four sides, and fourthreads plaited three times on the two other sides. Thusthe plait is shorter and the mesh consequently smallerthan that of Brussels lace. Mechlin was sometimesgrounded with an ornamental reseau called Fond deiieige, or (Eil de perdrix, and also with the six-pointedFond Chant; but these varieties are not common. Theearliest Mechlin has the points desprit, and is very rare.It was made at Mechlin, Antwerp, Lierre and Turnhout,but the manufacture has long been on the decline.
