In the event of the membranes becomingcaught as described, the policy to pursue is to allow the uterusto relax a trifle, when, without difficulty, the membranes emerge.The teaching, that when the placenta has been delivered themembranes should be rolled into a cord in order to enable theirextraction intact, is a common cause of so-called retention andmorbid adhesions of the membranes. The fact is that, whenthe membranes are twisted, if the internal os should close downa portion of the membranes are inevitably torn off. Adherentplacenta and retention of the membranes become very rare asthe physician familiarizes himself with the proper conduct ofthe third stage of labor. Such occurrences are clue either topathological changes
