English: A piece of the Orion Nebula.
This false-color image of the Orion nebula was taken at the Vatican Observatory using the VATT telescope with Sloan g′ (blue-green), r′ (yellow), and z′ (red) filters. This part of the nebula is illuminated by the Trapezium stars, a cluster of five extremely hot, bright stars which make up the point of Orion's sword. In this orientation, the Trapezium is to the left and up a bit. This image illustrates the ability of infrared light to penetrate through dust. In the foreground, there is a thin, wispy texture with a gray-white color. This is visible light reflecting off of foreground dust and gas evaporated from the nebula. Red light (yellow in this image), however, passes through the foreground material and can illuminate the colder material of the molecular cloud behind it. The newly formed stars located inside the clouds of dust and gas, however, are only visible in the infrared filter and show up as small red dots. |
