La Biblioteca Central de la Universidad se fundó en 1895, 31 años después de la fundación de la Universidad de Bucarest con la denominación Biblioteca de Carlos I de la Fundación de la Universidad. El edificio, diseñado por el arquitecto francés Paul Gottereau, se completó en 1893 y fue inaugurado el 14 de marzo de 1895. La colección de volúmenes ha crecido de forma constante desde los 3.400 volúmenes en 1899 hasta los más de 2 millones en 1970.

The Central University Library was founded in 1895, 31 years after the foundation of the University of Bucharest, as the Carol I Library of the University Foundation. The volume collection has grown steadily from 3,400 volumes in 1899 to over 2 million in 1970.
