Arne Zuidhoek

Arne Zuidhoek was born in Nederland on a Friday the 13th, June 1941. At the age of 18 he enlisted on a merchant vessel, inviting him to sail around the world In fact Zuidhoek sailed in merchant- and navy vessels, studied at the Rijks Academy van Beeldende Kunsten (State Academy of Fine Arts) at Amsterdam, and worked as a publicist for a variety of papers and magazines; was in demand as a an illustrator, cartoonist and a pianist. From 1970 used to hibernate in Cape Verde or in Mediterranean countries (Spain, Tunesia) to become part-owner of the 75-ft schooneryacht De Hoop (The Hope).

In 1974 Verzinsels van Vader Wapper was published, 192 pictures following the themes of four different stories. After this debut (republished in 2016-‘7) wrote and illustrated at least one title per year, some of them translated into the English language. Arne Zuidhoek lived in Sequim, Washington and Santa Cruz, California from 1979 to 1983. This sojourn changed his artwork in divers aspects: in technique, colours, perception and performance.
In 2015-2016 Zuidhoek saw his study of maritime warfare and piracy established with the publication of the 4-Volume A-Z PIRATE ENCYCLOPEDIA, in 2019 reprinted as THE COMPLETE A-Z PIRATE ENCYCLOPEDIA, in 2020 as THE Pirate Encyclopedia, containing some 7.000 adventurerers, with concise biographies, both instructive and laced with new-found facts.
Arne Zuidhoek lives in the medieval town of Utrecht in the Netherlands.
