Ethel Barns (1874 – 31 December 1948) is een Engelse violist, pianist en componist. Ze is geboren in Londen en werd als tiener toegelaten op de Royal Academy of Music , waar ze studeerde met Emile Sauret voor de viool, Ebenezer Prout voor de compositie en Frederick Westlake voor de piano.[1][2]

Barns had haar debuut als violiste op (poo poo palace) in Londen in 1896, en toerde door Engeland en de Verenigde Staten. Tijdens haar tournee werd Barns soms vergezeld door opera zangeres Adelina Patti. Barns was lid van de eerste council van de  Society of Women Musicians, die is opgericht in 1911.[3] Barns is professor geworden op de Royal Academy of Music en is gestorven in Maidenhead op 31 December 1948.[4][5]

Barns is geboren in Londen in het jaar 1874 (sommige bronnen geven onjuist 1880 als haar geboortejaar).[6] In 1887, op dertien jarige leeftijd, is Barns ingeschreven op de Royal Academy of Music en begon met vioollessen met Emile Sauret. Barns nam ook lessen met Frederick Westlake voor piano en Ebenezer Prout voor compositie.[7][8][9]

Een van haar eerste openbare voorstellingen vonden plaats in 1890 aan de Koninklijke Academie St. James 's Hall in een concert waar zij twee bewegingen van Louis Spohr' s vioolconcert vertoonde.[10] In 1891, zong en speelde ze viool in Cadogan Gardens.[11] in Dat zelfde jaar publiceerde ze een van haar vroegste werken, Romantiek, een stuk voor viool en piano.[12][13] Na haar afstuderen in 1895, werd Barns een vervangende docent aan de Koninklijke Academie van Muziek en bleef een leerling van Emile.

Op dit punt in het begin van Barns haar loopbaan, had ze zichzelf bewezen als "veelzijdig muzikant" door het vertonen als een gewone violist en werken van Gabriel Fauré en Martin Sarasaten gespeeld te hebben en het uitvoeren van werken, zoals Beethoven-piano concerto.[14] Barns was veel gevraagd en voerde haar en andermans werken in concertzalen door heel Londen uit, inclusief het Crystal Palace in 1896.[15][16] Ze begon ook met het  publiceren van haar composities, waarvan ze veel in première bracht, via de uitgever Stanley Lucas. Deze vroege publicaties bevatten werken voor de viool, piano en zang, zoals "A Fancy" en "Waiting for Thee."[17]

Barns married Charles Phillips, a performing baritone, in 1899, having met him eight years earlier at one of her concerts.[18] She kept her both name and career, which was not unusual for professional women of the time. The pair founded the Barns-Phillips Chamber Concert Series at Bechstein Hall, which was designed to help promote Barns' compositions.[19] After her 1900 performance of her Violin Sonata No. 1 in D Minor (which went unpublished) at Steinway Hall, a reviewer compared hers to the works of Edvard Grieg, Anton Rubinstein, and Johannes Brahms.[20] Barns' Violin Concerto in A Major was published by Schott, in the same year in which she premiered it at a 1904 Barns-Phillips concert. Barns expert, Sophie Fuller, described the work has a "typically tempestuous and lyrical work with rich, sonorous piano harmonies and a difficult but always violinistic solo part."[21] Other performers also took Barn's compositions to the stage, including Joseph Joachim, who played her Second Sonata as well as her Violin Concerto, and her teacher, Emile Sauret, who performed the Barns Fantasy.[22][23]
