Miriam Slaats wordt op 25 augustus 1958 geboren in Waalwijk, groeit op in een zakenmilieu en is de oudste uit een gezin met drie kinderen. Slaats is geen doorsnee kind: volgens haar moeder moest ze ‘altijd anders doen’. De zoektocht naar scheppen en herscheppen zit er al vroeg in. Na wat omzwervingen en verscheidene jobs gaat Slaats studeren en voltooit ze naast een aantal studies in 1988 de opleiding grafische en publiciteitsvormgeving aan de Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Maastricht. Na een tijd werkzaam te zijn geweest in het specialisme ‘Toegepaste Kunst’, waarvoor ze is opgeleid, besluit ze die richting achter zich te laten en zich volledig te storten op de Vrije Kunsten. Een spannende keuze, maar succesvol. Ze reist de wereld rond, en woont en werkt op veel plekken.
Slaats verwerft haar bekendheid in de schilderkunst, dat zich laat kenmerken door drie verschillende stijlen: figuratief kleurrijk, ingetogen aards en poëtisch wit. Ze werkt in haar vroege jaren naast het schilderen met diverse technieken, waaronder brons, fotografie en mixmedia, en ze laat haar klankkleur ook tot uitdrukking komen in poëzie.
Tijdens een bezoek aan een kunststofverwerkende fabriek in 2012, ontdekt Slaats per toeval kunststof als nieuwe materie. Ze komt in aanraking met het verwerkingsproces en de veelzijdigheid van het materiaal. Slaats is op slag verliefd: niet alleen op de eigenzinnige vormentaal, maar ook op de mogelijkheden en de interacties van plastic met de natuur.
Een tijdlang combineert ze het schilderen met het ‘onderzoeken’ van dat wat de verscheidenheid aan plastic haar verschaft. Tot ze op een dag besluit de kwast neer te leggen en het schilderen voor onbepaalde tijd achter zich te laten. Vanaf dat moment focust ze zich op kunststof in al haar facetten, van ‘the beauty’ tot ‘the beast’. Zo ontwikkelt zich een nieuwe Slaats-kunstvorm die ze BLOB ART* noemt.
In 2017/2018 pakt Slaats haar koffers en ze vertrekt opnieuw voor een aantal maanden naar het buitenland. Ze ontmoet tijdens haar verblijf kunstenaars, techneuten en wetenschappers. Vanuit deze ontmoetingen zijn samenwerkingsverbanden ontstaan. Naast haar BLOB ART ontwikkelt zich een nieuwe beweging: de BLOB art.movement. Onder deze vlag wordt er een breed scala aan co-projecten geconcipieerd, met als thema’s: kunst in relatie tot de planeet, mens, recycling en wedergeboorte. Eind 2018 wordt het BLOB art.movement manifest** geschreven.
Het werk van Slaats is opgenomen in diverse musea, privé- en bedrijfscollecties en wordt vertegenwoordigd in binnen- en buitenland. Slaats heeft diverse awards in ontvangst mogen nemen.
Naast het concipiëren van BLOB ART houdt Slaats zich bezig met het geven van lezingen. Ze werkt regelmatig met jong talent en initieert co-producties onder de BLOB art.movement-vlag.

One day, someone noticed this strange blob. A blob of black matter welling up from the ground. Warm to the touch, smelly, sticky, mysterious. It must have made him wonder. What on earth was this? What could you do with it? Could this be useful? As it turned out, yes, it could. In the end oil has shaped our very planet. It fuelled our human desire to move forward. It sparked new industries, economies and products. It inspired us to make it work for our lives. Where we are today, we are because of that first blob. The blob of oil that made someone wonder. As a BLOB artist, I want to refer to that moment. The moment of wonder brought about by oil. Metaphorically, I want to use the oil well to nourish people's minds. I take PVC, plastic, or any conceivable poly that has come out of the oil well to turn it into art that makes people wonder what the strength and necessity is. Wonder about the beauty or the beast. Love it for what it has done for us all. Hate it for what it has inflicted on us too. Admire it for its incredible versatility. Smile at the silly shapes it can produce. From the origin of the oil source I will shape the plastic in any way possible. Fuelling your thinking in any way possible. In sculptures, paintings, photo, video, poetry and experiences. In museums and galleries. On streets and online. Whatever you think about oil. Whatever you feel about plastic. BLOB ART aims to inspire you to form you own blob. Blobs of thinking that surprise you yourself. Blobs you may want to share or discuss. Creative blobs sparking new thinking inside you. Or just happy blobs to lift your day. As a BLOB artist, my aim is to make the world wonder. The blob of the oil well, that once turned into plastic, underlies my BLOB ART, and is here to fuel your mind and help to move the world forward again, from your personal reflection.

BLOB art.movement is inspired by the idea of ‘Art for Planet’ using recycled plastic materials to create an action of ‘Conscious Art’. Art with a message that could well have come from our planet itself. Raising awareness about plastic. The stuff that made all our lives easy in many respects. But also, the stuff that is now damaging life of our planet. Think about it. Talk about it. BLOB art.movement aims to unite multidisciplinary artists and creative thinkers from all parts of the world to create and strengthen environmental awareness. Creating art from plastic materials as a means to keep the conversation going. Recycling plastics into beauty instead of waste. Recycling plastics into fuel for people’s minds. Shaping it into art that makes people wonder. As sculptures and paintings, photography, video and experiences. In museums, galleries, companies and public buildings. On streets and online. Wherever there is room to surprise. Anywhere there is an opportunity to make people wonder about plastics. BLOB art.movement aims to inspire people to form their own blob. Blobs of thinking they want to share or discuss across the world. Creative blobs sparking new thinking and new ideas about plastic waste. As BLOB art.movement we want to do everything we can to build bridges of communication between art, science, industry, technology and education.
