Welcome! My name is Scaurus. I'm a Dutch student of history, and also take an interest in philosophy and history. Not surprisingly, I want to contribute to articles in this field.

Below you will find my main interests.

History - Political, cultural, religious, and to a lesser extend social history in modern times (1789 - now), but also ancient history, in particular that of the Roman Empire.

Politics - I am an active member of the Dutch Christian Democratic party CDA and its youth organization CDJA. More importantly, I identify myself as a conservative. For me, conservatism is a defence of the classical and Christian sources of Western civilization, and a defence of the tradition and communal life which have been build on this foundation. In my view, conservatism quite radically opposes socialism and liberalism, which are both liberationalist ideologies which undermine civil society, and thereby individuality.

Philosophy - Practical philosophy (which includes ethics, social and political philosophy), and the history of philosophy. Some of my favourite works are Plato's Republic and Michael Oakeshott's Rationalism in Politics. As in politics, I am traditionalist in philosophy. I think Enlightenment as well as Romanticism are fundamentally flawed, as they condemn man to slavery to his own passions, and dangerously radicalize the subjectivism which is inherent to the Western mind.
