• The development of Wikidata Bridge has started. The goal is to allow Wikidata edits from Wikipedia. [1]

Problems

• Sometimes pages load slowly for users routed to the Amsterdam data center. Investigation is in progress. [2]
• Wikidata query service was overloaded between 11:50 UTC until 13:15 UTC on June 24. It has been fixed. [3]

Changes later this week

• You will be able to read but not to edit all wikis for a short amount of time, on 3 July at 06:00 (UTC). This is to move a database. [4]
• There is no deployment of a new version of MediaWiki on the wikis this week (calendar).

Recent changes

• For event organizers, if you request a temporary lift of the IP cap for mass account creation, this will now also raise the edit rate limit for those new accounts at the event, which will prevent another bottleneck. [5]
• Administrators at all Wiktionary, Wikivoyage, and Wikisource wikis are now able to use the new partial blocks feature. [6]

Changes later this week

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 July. It will be on all wikis from 11 July (calendar).
• The design of MediaWiki's software windows will change for desktop users. Layout will be simpler, buttons will be bolder and clearer, and close buttons will be just icons. This is like the mobile design. This will affect ContentTranslation, VisualEditor, TemplateWizard, and other tools. [7]

• The mobile web will get more advanced editing tools. Seven more Wikipedias can use them now. This works for Arabic, Indonesian, Italian, Persian, Japanese, Spanish and Thai Wikipedia. You can try the tools on the mobile web and give feedback. [10]

Changes later this week

• The abuse filter system user will soon do maintenance edits on broken abuse filters. This user is called Filter and has administrator rights. This is meant to fix technical problems. It will not do any other changes. You can read more.
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 July. It will be on all wikis from 18 July (calendar).

Recent changes

• Communities interested by easing newcomers' first steps can now benefit from the Growth team experiments on their wikis. Check the conditions and the request process.
• The Coolest Tool Award 2019 is looking for nominations. You can recommend tools by July 29. The awarded tools will be presented at Wikimania. [12]

Problems

• The release of the last version of MediaWiki (1.34.0-wmf.14) has been blocked for groups 1 and 2. [13]

Changes later this week

• Phabricator database will be moved to a different server. Writes will be blocked on Thursday 25 July, between 05:30 and 06:00 AM UTC. Reads will remain unaffected. [14]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 23 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 24 July. It will be on all wikis from 25 July (calendar).

Meetings

• You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 24 July at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Future changes

• Some items in the visual editor will change later this week. This will make it easier to edit links, citations, and templates on both desktop and mobile. [15][16]
• With advanced search turned on you will be able to choose the sorting order of the search results when you do a search. [17][18]
• Users who edit from IP addresses whitelisted on a request for temporary lift of the IP cap for mass account creation will bypass CAPTCHAs. This will happen in August. If you think this should not happen for some reason, please let us know.
• The variable user_wpzero will be removed from AbuseFilter. A list of filters needing a fix is provided.

• The Score extension has been disabled for now. This is because of a security issue. It will work again as soon as the security issue has been fixed. [20]

Wijzigingen later deze week

• De nieuwe versie van MediaWiki zal op 7 juli uitgerold worden op testwiki's en op MediaWiki.org. De nieuwe versie zal op 8 juli uitgerold worden op sommige Wikipedias en alle projecten die geen Wikipedia zijn. Op 9 juli zal de nieuwe versie op alle overige projecten uitgerold worden. (kalender)

Toekomstige wijzigingen

• Abstract Wikipedia is een nieuw Wikimedia project. Het doel van het project is om taalneutrale informatie te verzamelen die eenvoudig in verschillende talen gelezen kan worden. Het maakt gebruik van Wikidata. De naam staat nog niet vast. Lees verder. [21]
• De iOS Wikipedia app ontwikkelaars denken na over nieuwe experimentele functies. Als je een iPhone gebruikt kan je hen helpen door een aantal vragen te beantwoorden.
• Een aantal vereisten voor ondertekeningen zullen binnenkort gehandhaafd worden. Lintfouten, invalide HTML en nested substitution zullen niet meer toegestaan worden in ondertekeningen van gebruikers. Een link naar je gebruikerspagina, overlegpagina of gebruikersbijdragen zal een vereiste zijn. Je kan controleren of je huidige ondertekening voldoet aan de nieuwe vereisten. De nieuwe vereisten worden ingevoerd omdat sommige ondertekeningen problemen kunnen veroorzaken voor gadgets, scripts of andere tekst op de pagina.

Recente wijzigingen

• Gebruikers kunnen anderen bedanken voor hun bewerkingen. CheckUsers kunnen nu gebruikersgegevens zien gerelateerd aan die actie. Dit kan helpen bij het identificeren van sokpoppen die anderen lastig vallen door overmatig gebruik van de bedankfunctie. [22]

Problemen en onderhoud

• Iedereen werd een paar weken geleden uitgelogd om een veiligheidsprobleem op te lossen. Het probleem was helaas niet helemaal opgelost. Daarom werd iedereen vorige week weer uitgelogd. [23][24]

Wijzigingen later deze week

• Wiki's die niet voor één specifieke taal zijn kunnen pagina's vertalen. Soms zijn delen van de vertalingen verouderd of ontbreken ze. Verouderde vertalingen worden nu al gemarkeerd met een roze achtergrond. Ontbrekende vertalingen worden binnenkort ook gemarkeerd. Deze markering kan soms problemen veroorzaken. Daarom zal het binnenkort ook mogelijk zijn om de markering uit te schakelen door gebruik te maken van <translate nowrap></translate> op de bronpagina. [25]

Tech News: 2020-30

Het laatste technieuws van de technische gemeenschap van Wikimedia. Vertel anderen over deze wijzigingen. Niet alle wijzigingen hebben een merkbaar effect op alle projecten. Vertalingen zijn beschikbaar.

Recente wijzigingen

• Een tijdelijke fix uit 2012 hielp wikis om hun hoofdpagina mobielvriendelijk te maken. Gebruik van deze fix is al sinds 2017 niet meer aanbevolen. Deze tijdelijke fix is uitgeschakeld op 14 juli. 60 wikis hebben nu een hoofdpagina die niet geoptimaliseerd is voor mobiel gebruik. Welke dat zijn en hoe dit verholpen kan worden kan je lezen op Phabricator. Van de Nederlandse projecten betreft dit alleen Wikipedia. Dit is hetzelfde issue waarover is geschreven in Technieuws 2020/24 en 2020/26.

Problemen en onderhoud

• Er is een probleem met de links in de sectie "In andere talen": de volgorde is verkeerd. De ontwikkelaars werken aan een oplossing. [30]
• Sommige gebruikers krijgen herhaaldelijk notificaties voor dezelfde gebeurtenis. In sommige gevallen gaat dit om gebeurtenissen die langer geleden hebben plaatsgevonden. [31]
• Sommige gebruikers hebben problemen met inloggen. Dit is vermoedelijk een probleem met cookies. De ontwikkelaars zijn nog bezig met het vaststellen van de oorzaak. Als je problemen hebt met inloggen kan je dat doorgeven op Phabricator. [32]

Wijzigingen later deze week

• De nieuwe versie van MediaWiki zal op 21 juli uitgerold worden op testwiki's en op MediaWiki.org. Recente wijzigingen

• De Starter kit is nu beschikbaar voor wikigemeenschappen. Dit is een pagina met een overzicht van technische zaken die een startende wiki nodig heeft. Dit is voornamelijk nuttig voor wikigemeenschappen die hier zelf geen of beperkte ervaring mee hebben. [34]
• De eerste features van het desktop verbeteringen project zijn nu beschikbaar voor alle ingelogde gebruikers op alle wikis. Om de nieuwe features te gebruiken moet Gebruik de Legacy Vector in de lokale of globale voorkeuren uitgeschakeld worden in de Vormgevingsvoorkeuren sectie. Meer verbeteringen zitten in de pijplijn. Feedback is welkom.
• Een UTCLiveClock gadget is op diverse wikis beschikbaar. Op wikis die de gadget direct van mediawiki.org inladen kunnen gebruikers nu ook tijdzones anders dan UTC instellen.

Problemen en onderhoud

• De reguliere uitrol van nieuwe versies van de MediaWiki software is deze week gepauzeerd. [35][36]
• Translation Notification Bot stuurde hetzelfde bericht meerdere malen naar iedere vertaler. Dit probleem is verholpen. [37]

Tech News

• The next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 19 July.

Recent changes

• AutoWikiBrowser is a tool to make repetitive tasks easier. It now uses JSON. Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage has moved to Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPageJSON and Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Config. Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage/Version has moved to Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage/VersionJSON. The tool will eventually be configured on the wiki so that you don't have to wait until the new version to add templates or regular expression fixes. [39]

Problems

• InternetArchiveBot helps saving online sources on some wikis. It adds them to Wayback Machine and links to them there. This is so they don't disappear if the page that was linked to is removed. It currently has a problem with linking to the wrong date when it moves pages from archive.is to web.archive.org. [40]

Changes later this week

• The tool to find, add and remove templates will be updated. This is to make it easier to find and use the right templates. It will come to the first wikis on 7 July. It will come to more wikis later this year. [41][42]
• There is no new MediaWiki version this week.

Future changes

• Some Wikimedia wikis use Flagged Revisions or pending changes. It hides edits from new and unregistered accounts for readers until they have been patrolled. The auto review action in Flagged Revisions will no longer be logged. All old logs of auto-review will be removed. This is because it creates a lot of logs that are not very useful. [43]

  • We introduced a magic word that can be used to exclude a page from Special:UnconnectedPages on Wikipedia and co. This will make the special page more useful to find pages on Wikipedia and co that should be added to an Item on Wikidata as sitelinks. (phab:T97577).
  • We reduced the number of Wikidata edits that show up in the watchlist and recent changes of Wikipedia and co by not triggering entries for a number of Wikidata edits that do not influence the article (phab:T286193)
  • Property Suggester: We are reviewing patches by a student working on an improved Property Suggester.
  • Working on improving how deprecated statements are handled when checking “type” and “value type” constraints" (phab:T170401)
  • Working on fixing a bug where the entity suggestions are opened when a valid value is already selected (phab:T285102)

Recent changes

• The tool to find, add and remove templates was updated. This is to make it easier to find and use the right templates. It was supposed to come to the first wikis on 7 July. It was delayed to 12 July instead. It will come to more wikis later this year. [45][46]
• Special:UnconnectedPages lists pages that are not connected to Wikidata. This helps you find pages that can be connected to Wikidata items. Some pages should not be connected to Wikidata. You can use the magic word __EXPECTED_UNCONNECTED_PAGE__ on pages that should not be listed on the special page. [47]

Changes later this week

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 20 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 21 July. It will be on all wikis from 22 July (calendar).

Future changes

• How media is structured in the parser's HTML output will soon change. This can affect bots, gadgets, user scripts and extensions. You can read more. You can test it on Testwiki or Testwiki 2.
• The parameters for how you obtain tokens in the MediaWiki API were changed in 2014. The old way will no longer work from 1 September. Scripts, bots and tools that use the parameters from before the 2014 change need to be updated. You can read more.

• A new version of MediaWiki came to the Wikimedia wikis the week before last week. This was not in Tech News because there was no newsletter that week.

Changes later this week

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 27 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 28 July. It will be on all wikis from 29 July (calendar).

Future changes

• If you use the Monobook skin you can choose to switch off responsive design on mobile. This will now work for more skins. If ⧼monobook-responsive-label⧽ is unticked you need to also untick the new preference Responsieve modus inschakelen. Otherwise it will stop working. Interface admins can automate this process on your wiki. You can read more.

    • We have finished most of the development on the new Special:NewLexeme page. You can try it at https://wikidata.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/Special:NewLexemeAlpha. We will make this available on Wikidata for testing with real-world data on July 14th.
    • We are continuing to work on the new search profile for languages to make setting the language of a new Lexeme easier (phab:T307869)
  • REST API: We are putting finishing touches on the first version of the API route to add statements to an Item. It is still lacking support for automated edit summaries.
  • We are working on word-level diffs to make it easier to see what changed in an edit (phab:T303317)
  • We are investigating the issue of labels not being shown after some merges (phab:T309445)

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 5 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 6 July. It will be on all wikis from 7 July (calendar).
• Some wikis will be in read-only for a few minutes because of a switch of their main database. It will be performed on 5 July at 07:00 UTC (targeted wikis) and on 7 July at 7:00 UTC (targeted wikis).
• The Beta Feature for DiscussionTools will be updated throughout July. Discussions will look different. You can see some of the proposed changes.
• This change only affects pages in the main namespace in Wikisource. The Javascript config variable proofreadpage_source_href will be removed from mw.config and be replaced with the variable prpSourceIndexPage. [52]

Recent changes

• In the Vector 2022 skin, the page title is now displayed above the tabs such as Discussion, Read, Edit, View history, or More. Learn more. [53]
• It is now possible to easily view most of the configuration settings that apply to just one wiki, and to compare settings between two wikis if those settings are different. For example: Japanese Wiktionary settings, or settings that are different between the Spanish and Esperanto Wikipedias. Local communities may want to discuss and propose changes to their local settings. Details about each of the named settings can be found by searching MediaWiki.org. [54]
• The Anti-Harassment Tools team recently deployed the IP Info Feature as a Beta Feature at all wikis. This feature allows abuse fighters to access information about IP addresses. Please check our update on how to find and use the tool. Please share your feedback using a link you will be given within the tool itself.

Recent changes

• The www.wikibooks.org and www.wikiquote.org portal pages now use an automated update system. Other project portals will be updated over the next few months. [56]

Problems

• Last week, some wikis were in read-only mode for a few minutes because of an emergency switch of their main database (targeted wikis). [57]

Changes later this week

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 26 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 27 July. It will be on all wikis from 28 July (calendar).
• The external link icon will change slightly in the skins Vector legacy and Vector 2022. The new icon uses simpler shapes to be more recognizable on low-fidelity screens. [58]
• Administrators will now see buttons on user pages for "Blokkade wijzigen" and "Gebruiker deblokkeren" instead of just "Gebruiker blokkeren" if the user is already blocked. [59]

Recent changes

• The Section-level Image Suggestions feature has been deployed on seven Wikipedias (Portuguese, Russian, Indonesian, Catalan, Hungarian, Finnish and Norwegian Bokmål). The feature recommends images for articles on contributors' watchlists that are a good match for individual sections of those articles.
• Global abuse filters have been enabled on all Wikimedia projects, except English and Japanese Wikipedias (who opted out). This change was made following a global request for comments. [62]
• Speciaal:BlockedExternalDomains is a new tool for administrators to help fight spam. It provides a clearer interface for blocking plain domains (and their subdomains), is more easily searchable, and is faster for the software to process for each edit on the wiki. It does not support regex (for complex cases), nor URL path-matching, nor the MediaWiki:Spam-whitelist, but otherwise it replaces most of the functionalities of the existing MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist. There is a Python script to help migrate all simple domains into this tool, and more feature details, within the tool's documentation. It is available at all wikis except for Meta-wiki, Commons, and Wikidata. [63]
• The WikiEditor extension was updated. It includes some of the most frequently used features of wikitext editing. In the past, many of its messages could only be translated by administrators, but now all regular translators on translatewiki can translate them. Please check the state of WikiEditor localization into your language, and if the "Completion" for your language shows anything less than 100%, please complete the translation. See a more detailed explanation.

Changes later this week

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 11 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 12 July. It will be on all wikis from 13 July (calendar).
• The default protocol of Speciaal:VerwijzingenZoeken and API counterparts has changed from http to both http and https. [64]
• Speciaal:VerwijzingenZoeken and its API counterparts will now search for all of the URL provided in the query. It used to be only the first 60 characters. This feature was requested fifteen years ago. [65]

Future changes

• There is an experiment with a ChatGPT plugin. This is to show users where the information is coming from when they read information from Wikipedia. It has been tested by Wikimedia Foundation staff and other Wikimedians. Soon all ChatGPT plugin users can use the Wikipedia plugin. This is the same plugin which was mentioned in Tech News 2023/20. [66]
• There is an ongoing discussion on a proposed Third-party resources policy. The proposal will impact the use of third-party resources in gadgets and userscripts. Based on the ideas received so far, policy includes some of the risks related to user scripts and gadgets loading third-party resources, some best practices and exemption requirements such as code transparency and inspectability. Changes later this week

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 18 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 19 July. It will be on all wikis from 20 July (calendar).
• MediaWiki system messages will now look for available local fallbacks, instead of always using the default fallback defined by software. This means wikis no longer need to override each language on the fallback chain separately. For example, English Wikipedia doesn't have to create en-ca and en-gb subpages with a transclusion of the base pages anymore. This makes it easier to maintain local overrides. [67]
• The action=growthsetmentorstatus API will be deprecated with the new MediaWiki version. Bots or scripts calling that API should use the action=growthmanagementorlist API now. [68]

  • mul language code: we are working on improving the termbox to integrate this new language code better (phab:T340644)
  • Mismatch Finder: We are working on adding a language selector to it so you can switch the language of the tool (phab:T328149)
  • Wikibase REST API: We completed two new endpoint for the Wikibase REST API:
    • Retrieve all statements from a Property - /entities/properties/{property_id}/statements
    • Retrieve a single statement from a Property - /entities/properties/{property_id}/statements/{statement_id}

Recent changes

• The Synchronizer tool is now available to keep Lua modules synced across Wikimedia wikis, along with updated documentation to develop global Lua modules and templates.
• The tag filter on Speciaal:NieuwePaginas and revision history pages can now be inverted. For example, you can hide edits that were made using an automated tool. [69][70]
• The Wikipedia ChatGPT plugin experiment can now be used by ChatGPT users who can use plugins. You can participate in a video call if you want to talk about this experiment or similar work. [71]

Problems

• It was not possible to generate a PDF for pages with non-Latin characters in the title, for the last two weeks. This has now been fixed. [72]

Changes later this week

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 1 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 2 August. It will be on all wikis from 3 August (calendar).
• Starting on Tuesday, a new set of Wikipedias will get "Add a link" (Georgian Wikipedia, Kara-Kalpak Wikipedia, Kabyle Wikipedia, Kabardian Wikipedia, Kabiyè Wikipedia, Kikuyu Wikipedia, Kazakh Wikipedia, Khmer Wikipedia, Kannada Wikipedia, Kashmiri Wikipedia, Colognian Wikipedia, Kurdish Wikipedia, Cornish Wikipedia). This is part of the progressive deployment of this tool to more Wikipedias. The communities can configure how this feature works locally. [73]
