Phillip Blondeel

Phillip Blondeel, (Rochester (New York), United States, May 20, 1963) is a Belgian plastic surgeon. He is senior lecturer at Gent University and professor at the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Gent University Hospital.

Blondeel's specialty is tissue transplants within the same body, especially in the subfield of breast reconstruction. He performed the first facial transplantation in Belgium.

Prof. Blondeel received his medical degree and underwent his specialty training at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven Medical School, Belgium. In 1998, he obtained his Doctor in Medical Sciences (PhD) degree at the Faculty of Medicine of the Ghent University. Prof. Blondeel is a fellow of the Collegium Chirurgicum Plasticum, and a diplomate of the European Board of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery.

Since 2016, Prof. Blondeel is the chairman of the department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Ghent University Hospital and full professor at the Ghent University in Belgium. He is part-time active as attending plastic surgeon at Clinique Montchoisi in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Prof. Blondeel is the chairman and founder of the Ghent Academy of Plastic Surgery (GAPS) and the president and founding member of GATE (Ghent Advanced Therapies and Tissue Engineering). He was the 2021-23 president of the European Association of Plastic Surgeons . He holds membership in numerous other scientific societies, among them the American Society for Reconstructive Surgery (ASRM) and the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS). He is honorary member of the Canadian, South-African, Kyrgyz and Swiss Society of Plastic Surgery.

He is also the creator, co-founder and president of the Board of the “Beautiful After Breast Cancer Foundation”. This public non-profit foundation aims to increase awareness and to fund research projects in the field of reconstructive breast surgery.

A world-renowned expert on aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery, Prof. Blondeel is a frequently invited speaker and teacher who has also authored or co-authored numerous books, book chapters, peer-reviewed articles, and abstracts. He holds an H-index of 59 and an i10-index of 139.

Prof. Blondeel’s main clinical achievements: co-inventor and pioneer in “perforator flaps surgery”, general team leader and head surgeon of the first facial transplant in Belgium (#19 worldwide) and pioneering work in 3D-bioprinting.
