Robert Charles Durman Mitchum (Bridgeport, 6 augustus 1917 - Santa Barbara, 1 juli 1997) was een bekende Amerikaanse acteur. Hij had een lange carrière en speelde in meer dan 100 films. Vele hiervan behoorden tot het genre van de film noir. Later ging Mitchum steeds meer in televisieseries spelen.
Mitchum vertolkte veelal de held of antiheld in voornamelijk westerns, oorlogs- en misdaadfilms. Slechts af en toe speelde hij de rol van schurk en juist deze rollen worden nu als zijn beste prestaties beschouwd. Zo vertolkte hij de rol van godsdienstwaanzinnige seriemoordenaar in The Night of the Hunter en van stalkende psychopaat in Cape Fear.
