Edmund Leighton

The Accolade ('de ridderslag') (1901)

Edmund Blair Leighton (Londen, 21 september 1853 – aldaar, 1 september 1922) was een Engels kunstschilder die historische taferelen schilderde, hoofdzakelijk uit het tijdperk van de Regency en de Middeleeuwen. Hij deed dit in een prerafaëlitische en romantische stijl.

Levensloop

Zijn vader was de kunstschilder Charles Blair Leighton. Hij werd opgeleid aan de University College School en de Royal Academy of Arts. In 1885 trouwde hij met Katherine Nash; ze kregen een zoon en een dochter.

Van 1878 tot 1920 liet hij elk jaar zijn schilderijen op de Royal Academy tentoonstellen.
