Mastodon is een Amerikaanse band die qua stijl tussen hardcore, hardrock en metal in zit. De band, die actief is sinds 1999, is door zijn diverse invloeden niet makkelijk in een genre in te delen. Zo zijn er niet alleen vanuit alle metal- en hardcoresubgenres invloeden, maar bijvoorbeeld ook uit de jazz. Een onderscheidend element van de band is het feit dat alle bandleden de leadzang beurtelings op zich nemen.

Sinds zijn ontstaan in 1999 is Mastodon een groot deel van zijn tijd op tournee geweest. Hierdoor heeft de band een grote naamsbekendheid weten te krijgen. Door het succesvolle album Leviathan en de tournee met Slayer en Slipknot is de band in Nederland en België bij het grotere publiek bekend geraakt.

Prijzen

Bij de Grammy Awards 2018, op 28 januari 2018, won Mastodon de prijs in de categorie "Best Metal Performance".[1] Ze kregen de prijs voor het nummer "Sultan's Curse", van het album "Emperor Of Sand", uit 2017. De andere genomineerden waren August Burns Red ("Invisible Enemy"), Body Count ("Black Hoodie"), Code Orange ("Forever") en Meshuggah ("Clockworks").
