Het verval van de cultuur

De volgende tekst in een vorige versie van het artikel was gemaakt op basis van de bron Tairona Heritage Trust.

"Het verval van de cultuur begon met de komst van de Spanjaarden. Rodrigo de Bastidas stichtte in 1525 de kustplaats Santa Marta en voorspelde in zijn proclamatie de onderdrukking en slavernij van de Indiaanse bevolking. Toch waren de verhoudingen niet altijd vijandig."

De bron vermeldt dat namelijk zo:

The Spanish explored South America from Hispaniola (present day Haiti and Dominican Republic), landing first on the Caribbean coast of Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in 1514. The building of the city of Santa Marta was started by Rodrigo de Bastidas in 1525. Bastidas had the following proclamation read out on the beach;

'I assure you that with the help of God I will enter powerfully against you, and I will make war on you in every place and in every way that I can, and I will subject you to the yoke and obedience of the church and their highnesses, and I will take your persons and your women and your children, and I will make them slaves, and as such I will sell them, and dispose of them as their highnesses command: I will take your goods, and I will do you all the evils and harms which I can, just as to vassals who do not obey and do not want to receive their lord, resist him and contradict him. And I declare that the deaths and harms which arise from this will be your fault, and not that of their highnesses, nor mine, nor of the gentlemen who have come with me here.'

Het is echter vreemd dat Rodrigo de Bastidas niet bekend staat als een onderdrukker. Hij wordt zelfs geprezen om zijn humane benadering van de oorspronkelijke bevolking en hij werd uiteindelijk vermoord door zijn collega's omdat die het niet eens waren met zijn benadering van respect. Daarom heb ik de volgende e-mail naar Tairona Heritage Trust gestuurd:

On your website http://www.eremite.demon.co.uk/Tairona/1pages/seca/a3spanconq.html it says that Rodrigo de Bastidas read out the following proclamation before he founded Santa Marta;

I need a reference for that. It seems contradictory to the common believe that Bastidas was a peacefull conquistador.

Het antwoord was als volgt:

This is an extract from the final section of a long document to be found in G. F. de Oviedo y Valdés, Historia General y Natural de las Indias Islas y Tierra Firme del Mar Océano, 7, 121-34. The document was edited by Dr Palacios Rubios and approved by a committee of Spanish theologians and prelates. It had to be carried and read out by all expeditions of conquest.

Het blijkt dus een standaard tekst te zijn die volgens het protokol van die dagen bij iedere kolonisatie moest worden voorgelezen, en het zijn daarom niet de persoonlijke woorden van Rodrigo de Bastidas. Daarom heb ik de zinsnede veranderd. Jan Arkesteijn 17 dec 2006 11:30 (CET)
