Terence Hill, pseudoniem van Mario Girotti (Venetië, 29 maart 1939), is een Italiaans filmacteur. Hij maakte vooral furore in de komische variant van het genre spaghettiwestern, waarin hij vaak een duo vormde met landgenoot en collega-acteur Bud Spencer.
Loopbaan[bewerken | brontekst bewerken]
Hill maakte onder zijn eigen naam op zijn twaalfde zijn acteerdebuut, in de film Vacanze col gangster (1951). Hij speelde in een groot aantal films en had een bijrol in Il Gattopardo (1963) van regisseur Luchino Visconti. In 1964 vertrok Hill naar Duitsland, waar hij onder meer acteerde in westerns.
De samenwerking met Bud Spencer startte in 1967, met de film Dio perdone... Io no! De samenwerking zou tot 1994 duren. Hill speelde in de films de slimme charmeur, Spencer nam de rol van ietwat zwaarlijvige dommekracht voor zijn rekening. Zijn pseudoniem koos hij in 1967 uit een lijst van twintig mogelijkheden die zijn producenten hem voorlegden. Hij kreeg 24 uur om te kiezen.
Hill speelde in de jaren zeventig en tachtig enkele keren mee in Hollywoodproducties. Op 30 januari 1990 kwam zijn jongste zoon Ross bij een auto-ongeluk om het leven. Na het overlijden van deze geadopteerde zoon raakte hij in een depressie, maar later keerde hij weer terug op het witte doek. Van 2000 tot 2008 en in 2011 vervulde Hill de hoofd- en titelrol in de Italiaanse televisieserie Don Matteo.
Na nog wat televisiewerk tussen 2011 en 2017 kwam in 2018 de film My name is Thomas uit, die Hill zelf regisseerde. De film gaat over een motorrijder met een Harley-Davidson die vooral rust wil en dat in een rustig maar woest deel van Spanje zoekt. Als hij onderweg ziet dat een vrouw wordt lastiggevallen door een aantal mannen, grijpt hij in. Thomas wil zijn rustige weg vervolgen, maar lijkt maar niet van de vrouw af te komen. De film werd in Italië gemaakt en kwam in het Italiaans (Il mio nome è Thomas), Duits en Engels uit. Vanwege de populariteit van Hill in Duitsland draaide de film in de bioscopen daar vanaf 23 augustus 2018, onder de naam Mein Name ist Somebody – Zwei Fäuste kehren zurück.
