Tommy James and the Shondells waren een popgroep tussen 1959 en 1970. Daarna vervolgde Tommy James (Thomas Gregory Jackson) met een solocarrière en kwam de band nog geregeld met reünies bijeen. Internationale hits waren Hanky panky (1966), Mony Mony (1968), Crimson and clover (1968) en Sweet cherry wine (1969). Bij elkaar kwamen twaalf singles in de Billboard Hot 100 terecht.
