Oxidoreductase

Oxidoreductasen zijn enzymen die redoxprocessen katalyseren. Redoxprocessen zijn processen waarbij door elektronenoverdracht één van de atoomsoorten wordt geoxideerd en een ander gereduceerd. Oxidatie is het proces waarbij elektronen worden afgestaan en reductie is het proces waarbij elektronen worden opgenomen. Acteert op de CH-OH groep van donoren (= reductor) met NAD+ of NADP+ als elektronen-accepteerder (= oxidator).

Tot de groep oxidoreductasen behoren de hydrogenasen, oxidasenreductasen, transhydrogenasen en hydroxylasen.

Bij de mens (Homo sapiëns) zijn er ± 154 oxidoreductasen bekend (werkzaam in het lichaam).
