UFO (rockband)

UFO is een Britse hardrockband, met zeer veel wijzigende bezettingen. Spilfiguur is zanger Phil Mogg. Belangrijkste leden zijn Peter Way en Andy Parker, met daarnaast een belangrijke rol voor Michael Schenker die de groep verlaat en opnieuw vervoegt in een niet te stuiten vaart.

Geschiedenis

1969-1973

De band wordt als Hocus Pocus opgericht in 1969 (zanger Phil Mogg, gitarist Mick Bolton, bassist Pete Way en drummer Andy Parker die eerste drummer Colin Turner verving). De naam van de groep komt van de Londense club UFO, waaronder ander de leden van Pink Floyd vaak te vinden waren. Hun muziek wordt omschreven als een tussenweg tussen de rock van Led Zeppelin en de metal van NWOBHM. En vooral de latere metalmuzikanten (uit de jaren 80 en 90 geven vaak UFO aan als één van de belangrijkste invloeden op hun eigen muziek. Nadat gitaristen Willis en Marsden even de line up vervoegden, komt met de van de Scorpions overgenomen Michael Schenker, een eerste hoogtepunt.

1973-1978

De band haalde hun succes in de begin jaren vooral in Japan en Duitsland. Dit door hun spacerock-achtige nummers, zoals The Coming Of Prince Kajuku. In 1976 vervolledigt een nieuw lid Paul Raymond de line-up de standaard zal zijn voor de 'Classic'-UFO bezetting. Er is dan al een liefde/haat verhouding begonnen met Schenker die in 1978 definitief vervangen wordt door Chapman. Het nummer "lights out" uit 1977 was gekozen door het vakblad guitar world op nummer 84 in de "100 beste gitaarsolo's".

1978-1982

Met Chapman werkt UFO verder aan het internationaal succes. Daaraan komt een eind met het vertrek van Pete Way naar zijn eigen band Waysted.

1982-1988

De groep moddert nog wat aan tot eind 1988 - ondanks de terugkeer van Way - de groep ermee ophoudt.

1991-1992

Er volgt een kortstondige reünie tussen Mogg en Way met nogal wat onbekende musici die even de legende in worden gekatapulteerd.

1993-2004

Als reactie op nogal wat discussie rond de rechten op de groepsnaam wordt UFO opnieuw opgericht en Micheal Schenker voegt zich weer bij de band. De Classic Line-Up is zowaar weer een feit. Het blijft echter een aan/of relatie. Omwille van familiale omstandigheden wordt Parker regelmatig vervangen door onder andere Dunbar (ex-zowat iedereen) en Dio en AC/DC-drummer Wright

2004-heden

Met de komst van Vinnie Moore als vervanger van de steeds wispelturiger wordende Schenker lijkt er opnieuw enige stabiliteit in de groep te komen. Live wordt Way omwille van Visa-problemen regelmatig vervangen.
