De Latijnse naam cartilago thyreoides[20][21][22] is een vertaling van het Oudgriekse begrip χόνδρος θυρεοειδής chóndros thureoeides[17] dat bij de Griekse arts Galenus voorkomt.[17] Zowel het Latijnse begrip cartilago als het Oudgriekse begrip χόνδρος betekenen kraakbeen.[17][23] Het Oudgriekse begrip θυρεοειδής betekent schildvormig,[17][21] afgeleid van θυρεός thureós, schild.[17][21] Overeenkomstig wordt in het Latijn ook cartilago scutifomis[12] gebruikt, van scutum voor schild.[23]
In de officiële Latijnse nomenclatuur (Nomina Anatomica, later Terminologia Anatomica) kent de naam voor het schildkraakbeen in de loop van de jaren drie varianten, namelijk cartilago thyreoidea.[2]cartilago thyroidea[3][4][5][6][7][8] en de eerder genoemde cartilago thyreoides.[22] De vorm met thyreoidea (met de uitgang -ea) zou een verkeerde omzetting[24] van het Oudgrieks θυρεοειδής naar het Latijn zijn. De vorm thyroidea (zonder e na thyr) zou een bewuste keuze zijn om tegemoet te komen aan de Engelstaligen die moeite hebben met de uitspraak van de 'e' in thyreoidea.[25] De vorm thyroidea komt eerder overeen met de Oudgriekse vorm θυροειδής, thuroeidés, deurvormig.[17]
