Het Portman Road Stadium is een voetbalstadion in de Engelse stad Ipswich. In het stadion worden de thuiswedstrijden van voetbalclub Ipswich Town gespeeld, die in het seizoen 2009/10 uitkomt in de Football League Championship, de tweede voetbalcompetitie van Engeland. Het stadion heeft vier tribunes die samen over 30.311 overdekte zitplaatsen beschikken.
Geschiedenis[bewerken]
In 1884 verhuisde Ipswich Town naar het sportveld aan Portman Road, dat op dat moment ook gebruikt werd door de lokale cricketvereniging. De eerste permanente tribune, bijgenaamd de Chicken Run, werd gebouwd in 1906. In 1936 werd Ipswich Town een professionele voetbalclub, en moest de cricketvereniging het veld verlaten. Tussen 1936 en 1938 werden houten tribunes aan de noord- en zuidzijde van het veld gebouwd, die in 1954 door betonnen tribunes werden vervangen, en tussen 1957 en 1960 werden een nieuwe westelijke tribune en lichtmasten gebouwd. In 1971 werd de oude tribune aan oostkant van het veld door een nieuwe vervangen. In 2000 werden de tribunes aan de noord- en zuidkant ingrijpend gerenoveerd.[1]
Andere evenementen[bewerken]
In 2003 werd de eerste en tot nu toe enige landenwedstrijd in het stadion gespeeld: een vriendschappelijke wedstrijd tussen Engeland en Kroatië, die door Engeland met 3–1 gewonnen werd.[2][3] Ook worden in het stadion soms muziekconcerten georganiseerd.
