Sulforafaan (1-Isothiocyanat-4-(methylsulphinyl)butan) is een sterke, indirect werkende antioxidant. Het middel is onder andere effectief tegen Helicobacter pylori. Momenteel[(sinds) wanneer?] wordt de werking tegen kanker onderzocht. In 1992 is sulforafaan door Dr. Paul Talalay en collega's van de Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore geïsoleerd en beschreven. De stof komt vooral voor bij kruisbloemigen en zit onder andere in de groente broccoli en zijn kiemen. In de plant komt het gebonden voor als het glucorafanine glucosinolaat. Sulforafaan wordt bij de beschadiging van de plantencel door snijden of koken via een enzymatische reactie gevormd uit glucorafanine. In een klein onderzoek is de stof met succes onderzocht ter bestrijding van autisme.[1]
De anticarcinogene werking berust erop dat sulforafaan de vorming van fase-II-enzymen van xenobiotische transformatie (zoals quinonereductase en glutathione-S-transferase) induceert, waardoor antioxidatieve afweermechanismen van het lichaam worden geactiveerd.
