De Football League First Division was tot 1992 de hoogste divisie van het Engelse voetbal. Vanaf het seizoen 1992/93 stapten de twintig beste clubs uit de Football League om in de commercieel veel aantrekkelijkere Premier League te gaan spelen. De Football League zette de competitie gewoon voort en vanaf 1992 was de Football League First Division de op-één-na-hoogste divisie in het Engelse voetbal. Er was wel promotie en degradatie tussen de Premier League en de hoogste divisie van de Football League. Sinds het seizoen 2004/05 wijzigde de Football League de naam naar Football League Championship.
