Daniel Michael (Danny) DeVito (Neptune Township, New Jersey[2], 17 november 1944) is een Amerikaanse filmacteur, filmregisseur en producer, die doorbrak als kribbige en cynische baas van een taxibedrijf in de sitcom Taxi. Kenmerkend voor hem is zijn geringe lengte: 1,47 m.[3]

Biografie

DeVito werd geboren in een rooms-katholieke, Italiaans-Amerikaans gezin en voltooide zijn middelbareschooldiploma in Asbury Park, New Jersey.

Hij begon zijn acteercarrière met bijrollen, waaronder een optreden in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975). Nationale bekendheid in de Verenigde Staten verwierf hij met de rol van taxidispatcher Louie De Palma in de televisieserie Taxi (ABC/NBC, 1978–1983). Internationale doorbraak volgde met de avonturenkomedies Romancing the Stone (1984) en The Jewel of the Nile (1985), beide naast Michael Douglas en Kathleen Turner. Zijn hoofdrol in de zwarte komedie Ruthless People (1986) leverde hem een Golden Globe-nominatie op. In 1987 regisseerde hij Throw Momma from the Train, waarin hij ook zelf optrad naast Billy Crystal. Verdere samenwerkingen met Douglas en Turner volgden in The War of the Roses (1989), en met Arnold Schwarzenegger in de komedies Twins (1988) en Junior (1994). In Batman Returns (1992) vertolkte hij de schurkenrol van The Penguin. Tevens sprak hij de stem in van Herb Powell, de halfbroer van Homer Simpson in twee afleveringen van The Simpsons.

Naast zijn werk als komisch acteur ontving DeVito lof voor dramatischere rollen, onder meer in Hoffa (1992), die hij tevens regisseerde, L.A. Confidential (1997), The Big Kahuna (1999) en Heist (2001). In 1999 produceerde en vertolkte hij een rol in Man On The Moon, een biografische film over komiek Andy Kaufman, zijn vroegere collega uit Taxi.

Parallel aan zijn acteerwerk ontwikkelde DeVito zich tot een invloedrijk producent. Via zijn productiemaatschappij Jersey Films bracht hij onder meer Get Shorty (1995), Gattaca (1997), Erin Brockovich (2000) en Garden State (2004) tot stand. In 2011 ontving hij een ster op de Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Danny DeVito is op 28 januari 1982 getrouwd met actrice Rhea Perlman, die hij ontmoette toen ze aan Hot Dogs for Gauguin meewerkten. Ze hebben drie kinderen, twee dochters en een zoon. Het stel is sinds maart 2017 uit elkaar, maar niet gescheiden.
