Georg Arthur Jensen (Raadvad, Denemarken, 31 augustus 1866 - Kopenhagen, 2 oktober 1935) was een Deense zilversmid.

Biografie[bewerken | brontekst bewerken]

Silver is the best material we have, silver has this wonderful shine like moonlight, a light taken straight from a Danish summer's night when covered by dew, silver can look like magical mist.

In 1924 opende Lunning de eerste winkel in New York. In Kopenhagen werd P.A.

Gundolph Albertus (1887 - 1970)[bewerken | brontekst bewerken]

In addition to overseeing all the Silversmithy production, Albertus also designed jewlery, flatware and hollowware. In particular, in 1930 he designed the ever popular flaware pattern, CACTUS, and in 1941, the first stainless flatware pattern, MITRA which was produced by Georg Jensen because of the wartime shortage of silver.

Albertus designed cups, bowls, dishes, trays and cocktail shakers many of which have stylised floral motifs similar to the Cacus design. Much of his holloware from the 1930s has very sleek modern shapes with floral ornmentation and can be seen as a transition from the early heavily ornamented designs to the more clean, virutally unornamented designs of the later years.

He was represented in many exhibitions especially in Denmark and France and received a gold medal at the Paris World Exhibition in 1925 and a diplome d'honneur at the 1937 international exposition in Paris.

SIGVAARD BERNADOTTE (1907 - 2002)[bewerken | brontekst bewerken]

Bernadotte was the son of Gustav Adolf VI, king of Sweden and brother of Ingrid, queen mother of Denmark. As a young man he wanted to become an actor but his father and grandfather didn't approve so he studied art history at Sweden's Uppsala University. He attended the School of Decorative Arts in Stockholm and became committed to designing practical, useful things that were stylish and beautiful not beautiful ornamental things with no purpose.

At the age of 23, he began to design for the Georg Jensen Silversmithy. His designs were a departure from what was thought of as the Jensen style. He introduced clear cut disciplined forms common in modern Swedish taste to the Danish Silver tradition. His elegant and distinguished designs show a preference for geometrical figures, spheres, cylinders and funnels enhanced with engraved lines, profiles and soldered parallel fluting.

After leaving the Georg Jensen Silversmithy, Bernadotte created industrial designs and in 1950 he formed a partnership with the architect Acton Bjorn, Bernadotte & Bjorn Industridesign. The firm designed many different products ranging from calculators to office refrigerators. In 1964, an offshoot of the firm, Bernadotte Design with Sigvaard Bernadotte at its head was created and it became the largest design consulting firm in Northern Europe.

Bernadotte experimented in all areas of design including designing sets for Hollywood movies.

Bernadotte was a major figure in the field of Scandinavian industrial design and a leader in the Society of Swedish Industrial Designers and the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design.

NANNA DITZEL (1923 - 2005)[bewerken | brontekst bewerken]

Nanna Ditzel is one of Denmark's most accomplished designers and was the first woman to design for Georg Jensen. She was born in Copenhagen and attended the Danish School of Arts, Crafts and Design and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1946. While still a student she began showing her work at the Cabinetmaker's Guild annual exhibits. She also met her first husband, Jorgen Ditzel at school and they began working and exhibiting together in 1944. She was trained in cabinet making; he in upholstery and they shared a design aesthetic based on creating comfortable, livable and simple environments.

The Ditzels spent the first part of their career together, as did many post war designers in Denmark, trying to produce furniture that would expand, separate or serve a dual purpose in order to appropriately furnish a small apartment. Two of their innovative designs were a tea table with a top that lifted off to become a tray and a 1951 bed that tapered towards the foot to take up less space. In 1949, Ditzel designed the functional, but more decorative, curved "Two Seat Sofa" and a 1951 chaise lounge for Knud Willadsen. The Ditzel's cozy 1959 "Basket" chair, meant to be suspended from the ceiling, is the most famous example of their experiments working with wicker. They also designed a set of enamel kitchen utensils for the Ravnholm factory in the 1950's, and Nanna designed a series of jewelry that won a prize from the Goldsmith's Association in 1950.

In 1954, they began to create designs for Georg Jensen. Jorgen died in 1961 but Ditzel kept their studio going and continued to work in a variety of media, designing among others, wooden furniture and silver jewelry. In 1962, Ditzel came out with the successful "Toadstool," which was a multi-purpose, stacking stool or table for children.

Ditzel created many designs for Georg Jensen, mostly jewelry although she also created some hollowware. In recent years, Ditzel has focussed mainly on furniture design.

Ditzel has won many major awards during her long career and has had her work exhibited all over the world. She received the silver and gold medals at the Milan Tirennale (1954 and 1960), the Lunning Prize (with Jorgen Ditzel in 1954) and a gold medal at the International Furniture Design Competition in 1990.

BENT GABRIELSEN (1928-2014)[bewerken | brontekst bewerken]

Bent Gabrielsen qualified as a goldsmith in 1949 after serving his apprenticeship with the goldsmith Ejler Fangel in Copenhagen. Gabrielsen was among the first group of students at the Goldsmith's Academy from where he graduated with top grades in 1953. He was immediately hired by the Hans Hansen Solvsmedie and worked there until 1969. By the time he left he was responsible for the firm's entire production. After leaving the Hans Hansen company, Gabrielsen set up his own workshop called "Gabrielsen's Guldsmedie". He kept his business small with he and his wife the only employees. A large part of his production was sold in Japan . Bent Gabrielsen won the Lunning Prize in 1964. As Erik Bohr, Chairman of the Lunning Committee wrote, " Bent Gabrielsen's jewelry carries absolute conviction as to its function; his handling of materials is so restrained and well considered that one feels this could hardly be otherwise. His jewelry is simple and clearly constructed, often with links connecting naturally with each other so that the complete piece makes up a beautiful whole. Every single detail of his things is worked out. There are no false effects. He does not take the easy way out."

PIET HEIN (1905 - 96)[bewerken | brontekst bewerken]

Piet Hein was a physicist who created new geometical forms called the super-ellipse and the soma cube. He was also a poet who wrote under the name "Kumbel". In the 1950s and 60s, he designed furniture, ceramics, silver hollowware and other home furnishings all of which have clean lines and smooth undecorated surfaces. They formed part of the style known as "Scandinavian Modern". Some of his designs incorporated the geometric forms he created. For example, he created a tray for Georg Jensen in 1966 in the form of a super ellipse and a container in the form of a super egg.

He designed jewelery and hollowware and his pieces show an evolution from the early forms that are reminiscent of Johan Rohde to straighter lines and less ornamentation more closely resembling Sigvaard Bernadotte's work.

His work has been exhibited widely in Europe and North America.

SOREN GEORG JENSEN (1917-1982)[bewerken | brontekst bewerken]

Soren Georg Jensen was the fifth of Georg Jensen's six children. He trained to become a silversmith and was apprenticed at the Georg jensen Silversmithy from 1931 to 1936. He later trained as a sculptor at the Kunstakademiets Billedhuggerskole (Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Sculpture) in Copenhagen from 1941 to 45 and had his work exhibited beginning in 1944 at The Charlottenhorg Spring Exhibition in Charlottenborg Denmark. In 1949, he returned to the Georg Jensen Silversmithy and from 1962 to 1974, was the artistic director, taking over from Harald Nielsen, his uncle.

Jensen's reputation as a sculptor was even greater than his reputation as a designer. He ended up realizing his father's ambition which was to be a sculptor. Soren Georg Jensen's sculpture is abstract and substantial and often in granite and he brought the same fine sense of form to his silver designs in jewelry and hollowware. His work in silver has the same simple natural forms as his sculpture and the decorative elements in the silver works are few.

Soren Georg Jensen work was exhibited internationally and his many awards included a gold medal at the Milan Tirennale (1960), the Eckersberg medal (1966) and the Thorvaldsen medal (1974).

HENNING KOPPEL (1917 - 82)[bewerken | brontekst bewerken]

Henning Koppel was a native of Copenhagen and joined the Georg Jensen Company when he was 27. He had just returned to Denmark from Sweden where he, a Jew, had fled to escape the German occupation of Denmark. He was trained as an artist, particularly in drawing and sculpture and studied at the Kunstakademiet (Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts) and the Academie Rancon in Paris. From the beginning, his silverwork was abstract and sculptural and unlike anything that went before. His early designs were for jewelry and the forms were flowing and organic looking, closer to the work of other artists of his time like Aalto, Calder, Dali and Leger than anything ever produced at the Georg Jensen silversmithy. By the late 40s, Koppel shifted to designing primarily hollowware and his pieces bear a distinctive sculptural quality harking back to his training as a sculptor. In 1957, Koppel created the CARAVEL pattern of flatware, considered by some the most handsome silver pattern created in modern times. This pattern was named after the French jet plane Caravelle, which SAS had acquired. In 1963 it won the prestigious Der Goldene Loffel award.

Throughout his career, his designs whether in Jewelry, Flatware or Hollowware were a radical departure from that of all the Jensen designers who went before. From the ornate, nature inspired designs of Jensen himself to the austere, functionalist designs of Sigvaard Bernadotte, Koppel's very original work was in the spirit of modern art. It attracted international attention and made Georg Jensen a leader in the Scandinavian modern design movement. Koppel also designed porcelain pieces for Bing and Grondahl, lights and clocks for Louis Poulsen & Co., glass for Kastrup and Orrefors and furniture for Kvetny & Sonner.

Koppel was a master draughtsman who executed precise designs and for his hollowware, clay models which allowed him to understand the design's three dimensionality. His work earned him the reputation of being the leading Danish silver craftsman. Koppel won many awards, including the Lunning Prize (1953), gold medals from the Milan Triennale (1951, 1954 and 1957) and the International Design Award of the American Institute of Interior Designers (1963)

HARALD NIELSEN (1892 - 1977)[bewerken | brontekst bewerken]

Harald Nielsen first aspired to be a painter but as the younger brother of Georg Jensen's third wife, Johanne, he was drawn into the Georg Jensen silversmithy. He started as a chaser's apprentice in 1909 and worked his way up to designer/director of the smithy school of apprentices. In 1954, he became the smithy director and in 1958 he became artistic director of the Company, a position he held until 1962.

He was Jensen's closest colleague and his design style was very similar to Johan Rohde. Both eschewed ornamentation in favor of form and line. He became the interpreter of Jensen's and Rohde's designs as he turned their rough design sketches, Jensen's often being on paper napkins, into precise drawings that were used by the silversmiths to create the pieces.

Nielsen's role as head of the apprentice school was particularly important after Jensen died in 1935 since Nielsen insured the continued high quality of the firm's design and output by recruiting talented young silversmiths and designers and training them according to the Jensen Silversmithy standards. Perhaps his most famous recruit was Henning Koppel. He was also responsible for the smooth transition from the first generation of Jensen designers, namely Jensen himself and Rohde to the generation which followed.

Nielsen designed many pieces of jewelry and hollowware, much of which is still in production and created the Pyramid flatware design.

REGITZE OVERGAARD (1946- )[bewerken | brontekst bewerken]

Goldsmith Regitze Overgaard works from the theory that jewelery should be as simple as possible so that the power is in the metal. She concentrates on form and materials. Her jewelry has volume and weight but is at the same time made with an apparent lightness giving it an elegant balance. In her new, very popular, Magic jewelry collection she combines different materials but ultimately permits the customer to determine how they are used in particular rings. The base ring of 18K white or yellow gold leaves room in the middle to allow for a smooth gold hammered band or a gold band with diamonds or a black rubber ring. The design allows for considerable personal choice.

Regtize Overgaard finished training as a goldsmith in 1970 and graduated from the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts in 1976. She has collaborated with Georg Jensen Silversmiths since 1987 and has taken part in many exhibitions.

JOHAN ROHDE (1856 - 1935)[bewerken | brontekst bewerken]

Johan Rohde was a painter, graphic artist, designer and critic. He came from a wealthy family and initially studied painting and drawing. By the late 1880s Rohde was already an important artist whose work had been exhibited in Denmark and Germany. He was active in the movement in Denmark which sought to challenge traditional ways of teaching at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and was a leader in the creation of the Free Exhibition, an exhibition mounted to show the work of artists whose work was not accepted at the more establishment Charlottenborg Exhibition.

He embraced the movement of that time to apply an artistic sensibility to objects of everyday life and he designed the funiture, silverware and hollowware for his own home.

He first met Georg Jensen when he commissioned Jensen to execute one of his hollowware designs. This collaboration was so successful that the men decided they would continue to work together with Rohde designing and Jensen executing pieces. In fact for the early years of the Georg Jensen silversmithy, there were two designers for the most part, Jensen and Rohde. Their styles were quite different. Jensen designed after the Arts and Crafts style with considerable ornamentation. Rohde's style was more controlled and he downplayed ornamentation in favor of form and line. He designed many hollowware pieces and flatware patterns, the most famous being ACORN.

At least as important, the success of this collaboration encouraged Jensen to bring in other designers who brought fresh ideas and new energy to the company.

ALLAN SCHARFF (1945- )[bewerken | brontekst bewerken]

At first glance, Allan Scharff's simple, abstract pieces could not be more different from the romantic, arts and craft style of Georg Jensen. In fact, however, they both spring from the same source, Nature. Georg Jensen always claimed that from his early childhood, Nature was his greatest inspiration. His work certainly bears this out with the blossom and fuchsia flatware patterns and his vines, leaves and grape motifs in jewelry.

Sharff has written "Nature has an abundance of forms. Nature is the most fascinating textbook. Nature's laguage is visual and direct. Scharff's birds and other natural forms dominate his work. To see how two artists start from the same place and use their individual vision to arrive at such different art is the wonder of creative genius.

Allan Scharff began his professional career with Georg Jensen at the age of 18. He worked there from 1963 - 67 and earned an apprentice certificate as a silversmith. He specialized in hollowware and his graduation project was the execution of a complicated pitcher designed by Henning Koppel. After completing his apprenticeship, he went to the Guldsmedehojskolem (Goldsmith High School) of the Insitut for AEdelmetal (Danish Institue of Precious Metals). TORUN (1927 - 2004)[bewerken | brontekst bewerken]

Vivianna Torun Bulow-Hube, know as Torun was born on December 7, 1927 in Malmo, Sweden. Her father was director of town planning in Malmo and her mother was a sculptor. Torun was the youngest of four children, born after a gap of nine years. All four children pursued artistic careers with a brother and sister becoming architects and another sister, a poet. But it was Torun who became the most famous, as the first woman silversmith in the world to gain international recognition.

Torun studied at Konstfack, the School of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, beginning in 1945 while pregnant with her first child, Pia. Eventually she married the child's father, a Danish journalism student. In 1948, Torun spent the summer in Paris meeting Picasso, Braque, Matisse and the other great artists of the day. She married a French architect and lived in Stockholm until 1956 having a second child, a son, Claude. As early as 1952, Torun exhibited her jewelry, made both in Stockholm and France (and bearing hallmarks from each country) in Paris.

In 1956, Torun and her husband divorced and she lost custody of her son. She moved to France with her third husband, Walter Coleman, an Afro-American painter, meeting many of the jazz greats of that time. She designed jewelry for among others, Billie Holiday which Holiday wore when she performed. The couple moved to Biot in the south of France in 1958 to avoid political problems they were encountering in Paris as a result of the war in Algeria.Torun produced many pieces during this period when young Swedish silversmiths would come to work in her studio, introducing her to new techniques. Torun renewed her acquaintance with Picasso who lived in the area and an exhibition of Torun jewelry was held at the Picasso museum in Antibes from 1958 to 1960. Torun had two children with Walter, Ira and Marcia.

In 1965, her marriage broke up and in 1966, she became involved with the Subud spiritual movement, an association which continues to today.

In 1961, Torun won the Lunning Prize which was awarded from 1951 to the 1970s to someone who had "pioneered a unique artistic contribution".

In 1968, she moved to Wolfsburg Germany and in 1975 to the neighboring village of Wendhausen to be closer to the Subud community. She had a workshop and worked with other artists in an association called "Die Schwinge".Beginning in 1967, Torun's production was taken over by Georg Jensen silver. Since moving to Germany, Torun has worked on things other than jewelry including cutlery, chinaware and handbags. In 1978, Torun moved to Indonesia where she still lives.

On November 5, 1992, Torun was awarded the Prince Eugen medal by King Carl XVI Gustav of Sweden. The medal ia bestowed for outstanding artistic achievement.

In September of 1992 Georg Jensen in Copenhagen held an exhibition to celebrate 25 years of Torun's association with the company, 45 years of working with silver and her 65th birthday. From October 1992 to January 1993, the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in the Louvre held a 45 year retrospective of Torun's work. Torun's innovative designs include the "figure of eight" ring and the stainless steel bangle watch. The ring Torun calls "Two become One". As she has said, "to me it symbolizes infinite love, and is one of my very earliest pieces-my wedding ring- from the 50s". The stainless watch she made in 1962 as a contribution to an exhibit at the Museu des Arts Decoratifs in the Louvre. The theme of the exhibition was "an object of your dislike". "Well, the relentlessness of time is what i abhor, so i designed a watch with no numbers; it was intended to be an ornament, not a chronometer. At first it only had a seconds hand, but when Geoorg Jensen began producing the watch in 1967, we added both the hour and minute hands. The bracelet did not completely encircle the wrist but was left open at the outside so as not feel oneself a prisoner of time..." It was the first watch of its kind-audaciously simple, stripped of all but the bare essentials. The dial was like a mirror, so whenever you looked at it, you saw your own reflection, a reminder of the present moment...the very second. It was the first watch ever produced by Jensen.

"It is a search for the source, the simple and natural, that impels Torun's creative work. Inspired by the art of primitive cultures, African, Oceanic, Egyptian, she creates her forms not for the sake of beauty alone; but carefully considers both the form and function of each piece of jewellery she makes. A practical detail such as the fastening is not concealed but on the contrary accentuated. She subscribes to the philosophy that what is functional is also beautiful".

From From TORUN by Ann Westin, published 1993 by Carlssons. SIEGFRIED WAGNER (1874 – 1952) Siegfried Wagner was a sculptor whose work, The Lure Players, 1914, was placed in Town Hall Square in Copenhagen. Siegfried Wagner also worked at the Mogens Ballin workshop like Georg Jensen, and designed the Dahlia pattern based in Nordic symbols. He’s better known, however, for his sculptural works.
