Pogonodon behoorde tot de rijke diversiteit aan nimraviden die tijdens het Oligoceen op de boomsavannes van Noord-Amerika voorkwam, naast bekende vormen als Nimravus, Dinictis, Hoplophoneus en Eusmilus.
