Universal Music Group is het grootste moederbedrijf van platenlabels ter wereld, met een marktaandeel in 2005 van 25,5%[1]. Het bedrijf is gevestigd in Santa Monica en New York City en is een onderdeel van het Franse mediaconglomeraat Vivendi SA. Het concern heeft sterren als Aerosmith, Mariah Carey, Eminem, U2, Lady Gaga en Cimorelli onder contract.
Het bedrijf ontstond in 1996, toen eigenaar Seagram MCA Music Entertainment Group hernoemde naar Universal Music Group[2]. Een jaar eerder had Seagram de MCA Music Entertainment Group verworven, door de overname van MCA, Inc. In 1998 nam het Seagram Company PolyGram over van Philips[3] en fuseerde het met de Universal Music Group.[4].
Door de fusie van het Canadese Seagram met het Franse Vivendi in 2000, werd de Universal Music Group onderdeel van Vivendi Universal[5]. Tegenwoordig is Vivendi Universal bekend als Vivendi SA.
In 2012 maakte de Universal Music Group de overname van EMI Recorded Music bekend[6]. Tot dan toe was EMI een van de grootste concurrenten van de Universal Music Group geweest. Om goedkeuring te krijgen van de Europese autoriteiten, moesten wel verschillende voormalige EMI-onderdelen van de hand worden gedaan, zoals het Parlophone label en EMI Classics.[7] Daarnaast verkocht UMG het eigen Cooperative Music, bekend van onder andere het V2 label, aan PIAS Entertainment.[8]
Universal Music Group bezit ook lokale muzieklabels in Australië, Brazilië, Canada, Colombia, Tsjechië, Finland, Duitsland, Hongkong, Hongarije, Italië, Japan, Mexico, Nederland, Noorwegen, Polen, Rusland, Spanje, Zwitserland en Turkije.
Vandaag de dag zijn Sony Music Entertainment en de Warner Music Group de voornaamste concurrenten.
